Do you like Christmas?

-- Anonymous, November 27, 2000

Answers

Yes, I get to give my friends gifts!

-- Anonymous, November 27, 2000

no! I like it when relatives give me money though.

I love Christmas. And not just getting the free loot, I like giving people stuff. Also a lot of people donate money, give presents to homeless kids, whatever, on Christmas, and that's better than everyone ignoring the less fortunate *all* year.

I don't despise the holiday. I get some cool cards from people and nice gifts, but lately it hasn't been the same since we don't celebrate it with the relatives. seeing all of them is what made it fun. making the "gift piles"....now it's just me and mom.

eh, I guess I'll semi-celebrate it and semi-not. I'll send the xmas cards and gifts for people; I'll get some and that'll be that.

Have you thought about celebrating Ramadan? It starts today (the 27th).

Anyway, just another alternative. Though, I believe Wiccans celebrate the Solstice, which is another non-commercial December holiday.

I'm not really a big fan of christmas. Had a very good friend of mine who was killed in a car accident on christmas day last year, so kinda put a downer on the whole thing.

ramadan involves serious fasting, and it's a muslim holiday. if katie doesn't want to celebrate hanukah or kwanzaa because she is not black or jewish, why celebrate ramadan? it's also pretty disrespectful...

Maria,

Disrespectful? So I'm being disrespectful to Christianity by celebrating Christmas, despite the fact that I think Jesus was the world's most famous con artist?

-- Anonymous, November 27, 2000

Maria... I pretty much said the opposite there. My point was that a lot of people who aren't Christian celebrate Christmas, so telling me that I can't celebrate Hanukah/Kwanza because I'm not Jewish/black wouldn't really be much of a valid argument.

I HATE christmas. And even more so this year since I DO work in a mall. But it's not just the total overcommericalization of the whole thing, just everything about the holiday. Just give me a drug so that I can sleep from now until Dec 26th.

I like Christmas. I like Christmas shopping. I like working in a toy store during the Christmas season. I volunteered -- no, *begged* -- to work the day after Thanksgiving. I wanted to come in at 6:30 AM, but there were enough people already working. So I got up at six AM and hit the Best Buy sales. As I did last year. I must be insane, no?

im thinking, in responce to the whole winter thing in your journal, that in isrial, its damn hot... you see those videos where everyone is still debating over that desert shit..... that MIGHT be why you dont think it was in winter. How would we know when the fuck he was born anyways? because he was born, we got our years fucked up. Ah well.....

christmas.... it's alright. i dont like that it's commercialized so much, but i like the lights. not to mention that it's a time for getting some good presents.

To quote Dave Barry, You can celebrate Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukah, or Atheist Kids Get Presents Day.

X-mas is my favorite time of year everyone has great cheer except for my uncle who only drinks beer he gets so messed up I want to shoot him like a deer...

If christmas stopped coming, I wouldn't cry. I hate the holiday for pretty well all the same reasons as you. Christmas isn't my thing, as well as commercialized anything. Then of course I have that, "I'm an atheist," thing, which goes against all prospects of christmas, but that's just a minor detail. Above all that, I HATE recieving things. I'm just one of those damn people that can't stand compliments, much less a computer or some damn cd (that I probably want, but how goes it) because it's December.

I'm with you Katie... I actually choose not to celebrate the holiday because I'm a Jehovah's Witness and every tradition that it comes from is pagan... and besides that, in the Bible, Jesus never celebrated his birthday, and if he himself chose not to do that, why on earth are we so arrogant as to say we think he would like us to be doing it for him? Plus there's that whole overcommercialization bit...

I also live in the wrong apartment... we have two christmas trees, though neither is 7.5 feet tall, and I have been allocated a stocking. It has a moose stuck in a snowbank on it, because i said that I had serious issues with santa clause (which I do.) respell his name and you get Satan. Anybody else make that connection?

Yes. I love Christmas. Christmas gives me warm, fuzzy feelings.

-- Anonymous, November 28, 2000

You go liz! Honestly -- I'm so excited to know of a Christian who acknowledges Christmas' (and Easter, and Valentine's Day, and Halloween) roots in pagan festivals. I just wanted to say I have great respect for you. Rock on.

I love Christmas. We nearly always have a full house, so I get to see people I don't see very much (family friends, not family - with the exception of my parents and a couple of cousins, I dislike my family) and it's really nice the way everyone always seems more friendly and warm.

Except on the digital ink messageboards, of course :)
