i know there is also the terepin recorder, but these seem more interesting cause they can do svcd's too. does any one have one of these and have some input on them, or know where to order???? i just found out about them and have written the companies but not heard anything yet, but if any one has one, do you know do they have a timer on them like on vcr's so i can set it up to record shows when away???? also any news as to how well it might record if i hooked up my record player to it to make a cd from vinyl. thanks any news would be much appreciated, and i'll post any thing new i hear.

I can not see how a recorder would ever give the same results obtainable with the mjpeg hardware out now for computers now.
I see them all as a dazzle type capture device hooked up to a cd burner. All packaged up in a set-top box. (A setup for amature vcd makers) With quality around 50% of what can be made with mjpeg. There is no magic recorder set-top to make vcd. We are AT LEAST 5 years from making such a device in a set-top with any real quality.
Wait a few years when they aren't holding onto dvd hardware/software so tight. DVD will be the way to go. You can put a couple of your vhs movies onto a dvd.

That dosn't exactly answer his question. Not that I can answer it either, yet I've used several software mpeg encoders AND the DVC II, and the DVC II does a very good job.

As for being five years away from making a decent stand alone VCD burner, have you used any of the current ones?

Anyway, I agree about DVD, if you can wait several more months.

Funny that you mention but I have a friend that just bought one and is better that I thought possible. No droped frames no conversion just plug and play or copy ... They cost between 600 and 1600 (I've heard!) and have been around for a couple of years but on market for about six month. Don't know yet where my friend got it from but I suspect his recent trip in Hong Kong has something to do with it. Good luck.
