ABC News Exit Poll

ABC News exit poll

I post this with some hesitation because the URL is very long and I'm not confident the link will work; also because I don't trust a poll like this---if I were to be exit polled, I think I might fib a bit, just out of spite. I bet I'm not the only one.

Still, it's interesting. A quick perusal shows the conventioal wisdom---women favored Gore, men favored Bush, gays favored Gore, singles favored Gore, families with children under 18 favored Bush, gun owners favored Bush, people who considered themselves non-religious favored Gore (except Jews), Bush voters had higher incomes, Gore voters were more pro-choice, Bush voters were more pro-life.

I chuckled at two categories--Gore voters were both the highest educated and the lowest educated and more Gore voters scored themselves as "upper class" than Bush voters. Absolutely no voters for eithr candidate scored themselves as "low class". (Well duh, none would have said they have body odor either).

I was right. It didn't link all the way to the exit poll. So happy clicking.

I don't think this is the same link you were talking about, but it does deal with exit polls.

"here's the poll"--

Yes, that's theone, thanks. A few other points that I forgot to highlight:

Race--blacks voted for Gore almost en mass. Hispanics also voted more often for Gore but their proportions were less dramatic than Blacks. Asians also voted for Gore but a higher percent voted for Bush than either Blacks or Hispanics. (BTW, are we talking black Hispanics, white Hispanics, Indian Hispanics, Caucasian/Indian Hispanics? I bring that up only to show what a farce some of these categories and questions are)

Religion--"do you consider yourself part of the Conservative Cvhristian movement also known as the religious right?" According to this survey, 80% of the Bush voters answered "yes" and 42% of the Bush voters answered "no". (Shouldn't they add to 100

Lars, are you a racist?

-- (sounds@like.it), November 25, 2000.

Well, I had to post before I was finished making my trenchant ocservations. My browser died and I could not type. Now I have re-booted and will be on the air for at least 10 minutes.

Religion (cont')--what I was getting around to is that IMO the "Christian Right" question is totally bogus. I know many Bush voters and none of them are religious extremists or bigots. This poll claims 80% of Bush voters identified themseves as "Christian Right"? Total BS.

Qualities sought in a President--Bush voters valued honesty and leadership; Gore voters valued intelligence and caring.

"sounds like it"--

What did I say that sounded racist? I was merely summarizing the results of the exit poll. Do you think it is racist of me to observe that there are vastly different categories of Hispanics and that to lump them all together is ludicrous?

-- Lars (lars@indy.net), November 25, 2000.

We know that you are a Bush supporter, and that you do not respect Gore because of things that Clinton did. Your posting of this information seems to imply that, in your mind, Gore is somehow less qualified to be president because he was favored among racial minorities.

People are people, and regardless of race, their votes are of equal value. I apologize if I have made an incorrect assumption about your motives, but I fail to see any other point in bringing this information to our attention.

Oh, now that's the MOST ridiculous thing I've EVER seen posted here, and I've seen some pretty far out stuff. Lars just posted statistics. For crying out loud! How in God's name can you call him a racist for THAT? As a Jew, I've seen REAL racism, and this AINT IT. SAve it for the real thing,...before you make the word into a farce...!

-- kritter (kritter@adelphia.net), November 25, 2000.

What was the point then, in posting the statistics about which races voted for which candidate?

-- (sounds@like.it), November 25, 2000.

Thank you Kritter. That is exactly what I was doing--posting the results of that particular exit poll. I prefaced the post by saying that "I don't trust a poll like this". I don't think people necessarily give honest answers to such polls (I wouldn't) and I don't think that all the questions are honestly framed.

Hence my point on Hispanics--what is the point in tabulating "Hispanic" votes when we are talking about numerous ethnicities, religions, races and nationalities. Questions like that are insulting, devious and probably have a hidden agenda.

All that aside, I carry over enough of the engineer to wonder exactly who voted for who. I am skeptical about exit polls but also fascinated by them.

The fact that ABC broke these statistics out into a number of catagories including race does not automaticially mean ABC (or Lars) are racists.

This poll claims 80% of Bush voters identified themseves as "Christian Right"? Total BS.

Lars, you misinterpreted the poll on this point. 14% of the voting public consider themselves to be members of the religious right. Of that 14%, 18% voted for Gore and 80% voted for Bush.

83% of the voting public do not consider themselves to be members of the religious right. Of that 83% who don't, 54% voted for Gore and 42% voted for Bush.

-- (st@ts.101), November 25, 2000.

According to some quick calculations I just did from these figures, 11.2% of Bush's votes came from the religious right, and 2.5% of Gore's votes came from the religious right.

-- (st@ts.101), November 25, 2000.

Stats--

Yes I missed that 14% from the first column; thanks for pointing it out. Your calculations result in numbers that are much more believable to me---I could believe that 11.2% of Bush's vote came from the Christian Right altho that begs the question of what is the definition of the Christian Right?

I would say that the question "are a member of Christian Right" is one a self-perception, much as is the question of what "what class are you in?" The Gorebots ranked themselves as upper-class at a higher rate that the Bushwhackers. LOL, the elitism of Liberals is never far from the surface.
