World o' the Stage

This is one of my favorite concert shots (of my concert shots, that is), Greg Brown taken from the wings at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. The Orpheum is huge, it's a long walk to center stage. This was done with a 135 f2.8. The show was a two night review of folk players- I imagined this shot the first night while Chris Smither was playing, seated, but was in the wrong position and couldn't cross the stage. Everyone else stood to play that night, but the next night the stagehands dragged out a chair for Greg Brown and I said "Yes!" and scuttled over to the wing... This is what I was talking about at the end of another concert thread - it's not a "traditional" music shot- it's kind of solemn, but when someone commented "man, that stage looks like a lonely place" I knew the job was done...

Really nice, a tad more exposure would help a small bit but either way looks nice.

now *this* is a neat concert shot! the edge exposure is very attractive, and the open, dark distance makes for a very dramatic view. good work.

You did good. The isolation of the musician on stage is so well shown here. I've been there and done that, and you sure can feel small and isolated. Nice to see a shot that illlustrates that so well. Wish i'd been there to hear Chris Smither.....

Now you're making me need to go dig out my stage shots of Rory Block!

Thanks very much everyone- there is a little more shadow detail in the print but you'll have to take my word for it- There's a writeup on Greg Brown in the New Yorker this week... of all places....
