I agree, it really would be nice if minors could participate in Junk Yard Wars. There has to be a way around the child labor laws, or some sort of an agreement which can be signed. Seems they allow minors on battlebots..

The 13 sounds like for the robot competition. Where you get to build at home or school. No insurance company would allow someone under 18 anywhere near power tools or piled scrap metal. Nor would child labor laws. They can't control what you do at home or school, but in a "workplace" (and the scrap pile qualifies) kids aren't allowed to use power tools. Too many of them hurt themselves.

from the FAQ http://www.junkyard-wars.com/faq.htm "Every member of your team must be 18 or over. I am afraid we can't bend this rule for Junkyard Wars. (We are hoping to do a children's version of Scrapheap some time in the future). "

Sorry to burst your bubble.

My friends and I have also been toying around with the idea of participating. However school, work, and wanting to get more freelance welding under our belts has delayed our decision to apply for atleast a year. Which also means more time to practice just about anything and everything that we could possibly need on site (I am thinking welding and weilding a dremel are at the top of my list I need to refine). But hey, this means you also get more time to prep for it.

Also for highschool students, look into http://www.usfirst.org/ a similar program, except its 6 weeks instead of 10 hours, and its a robot with new parts that does a task (the task is the part you dont know until you officially start) and also covers accounting for all the parts, making sure its compliant with all the rules, and pretty much giving students a chance to work in a real engineering based environment. (I participated my Sophemore year, and it was a blast, went to orlando florida to compete in disney world).

I thought of a solution if lets say a team of 3 people would go but then the specalist would be an aldult witch could make sure everyone knows who to weld and all that safly

I don't thinks thats fair just because where not 18 does mean where going to kill are slefs with hard durty tools. I haven't bulid much, but i would like to. I have my own designs and every thing. I want to buy my own tools soon, get some wood, wire, srew, nails and all that other good stuff and bulid.

I also can't join in junkyard wars because i am only 15. I work with all sorts of equipment and just last summer i helped rebuild a diesel engine. Why don't we all get together and make our own show junkyard wars for teens, or something like that. We could adapted it so that we could compete. We could either show the adapted version to T.L.C. or try for some other station to host it. It is the only way we are going to be able to be on junkyard wars. So give me your feed back.

Hey Mike the reason you can't be on the show is they don't allow illiterates on it. You have to be able to put two semi intelligent words together, witch leave you out in the cold.

-- Rick (Blip@bot.com), February 04, 2001.

Hey Rick, Are you talkng about a "Witch" like at Halloween? Or did you mean "Which"??? Wich wun iz iet????

Get "Disney Channel's" email address, and start writing them about it. They are teen oriented, and may contact "RDF" or "Discovery" about buying the rights to do a teen show like "Junkyard Wars" for younger contestants. It is good to see that so many teens are intrested in the show, and hopefully, it will still be going strong when you are all old enough to be on it. Meanwhile, study the shows and learn what you can about getting the necessary skills to compete. A big part of the reason for the show is to educate, and if it is an inspiration for teens to learn how things work, and to learn machine building skills, then it has accomplished that goal. Good luck to all of you.
