the meaning of a sentence from THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

what is the meaning of this sentence? A huge human foot d'or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel.

And what the foot, a serpent and the fangs are imbedded in the heel symbolize in this sentence?

The coat of arms pictures a series of literary symbols. The snake is a representation of Montresor biting the foot (Fortunato) that treads upon it. This is a dying attack that allows for the weak to triumph over strong, even if it is a final act. The motto “No one attacks me with impunity.” ties to this symbolism. Montresor feels that his character was attacked by Fortunato and now avenges this attack. These combine as both ironic and foreshadowing, two key elements when analyzing this work.

first of all, erra erra, e to the r to the r to the a.... now, a huge human symbolizes masses of people, people who are naive and feel that revenge is the right answer. in writing this, poe critics the public while telling his story. A feild azure then means that these people are lost, further relating to the huge human, with a foot of gold. The poe describes how mobs of people crush all the rest of the population. The people who are crushed seem bad to the mob of people but only because the people are dumb and do not understand the meaning of life. ANYWHO..... i love chris gika and yeaaaaaaa erra erra erra erra

I really think this means that as "no one attacks me with impunity" Montressor would make Fortunato "smell what the Rock is cooking," therefore, it's a preview or a foreshadowing, a premonition Fortunato should had of what was coming to his existence . . . of course in nice background of sky blue of darkness in the catacombs (the ironic and paradoxical mental landscape that the sentence makes the reader picture) It's revenge, nothing but the satisfaction of making the huge human, the huge insult to be paid by the psycho's revenge . . . Forget the serpent, it's just a metaphor of REVENGE in a psycho's way

A huge human is a hero, someone that today do not exist, just in movies as Spiderman and his theme song "HERO" There you get an ironic symbol from a feebleminded writer who wants to express his desires and repressions . . . the field is the same, an erotic and illusory background which often appears on movies but not in reality as the foot of the maniac reveals the passion for revenge in the darkness of the catacombs ! You should get an A *** Remember not to drink whenever you're near the catacombs with some psychopathetic people in EUROPE.

Queeeee christmas mano . . . NOOOOOO LO DUDO (I don't doubt it) Montressor is still at the catacombs, I mean, his bones . . . que crica mano !uuuuuuuuuuunnnnnna amiga que lo ayude (a girl should help him) y que paoooooooooo (and what the hell !!! he's gone !

I'm not going to the gym today 'cause it makes me sick knowing that the huge serpent could imbed thy fangs into myself and I think I am autist so that's probably a problem I can not resolve.

thissssss is revenge from Montressor !!! And I like Johnny's answer, Fortunato should had smell what the Rock was cooking, but the molecules of CH3 CH2 OH (alcohol) he had in his mind did not let him to foresee thy destiny ! OH LORD !

But what if Montresor was merely Fortunato's conscience along a journey, of which Montresor kindly chose to accompany him, along the road to Hell maybe? This being a drunken journey that Fortunato never refused to go on, no matter what or whom he damaged. To his end, Fortunato was given the opportunity to turn around in life. The clue to a higher spiritual level of Montresor could be found in the Azure skies above, with an exponential foot measure, bearing down upon the biblical known serpent. And so if purgatory were a place where spirits do not know they are dead until they see the light, would this be the reason Fortunato's voice could still be heard after the almighty had been and gone? I wonder, is he lost forever? Because maybe he just chose to go with the biggest bottle in the Hell house, to drown his sins in. Could be there for a long time (?).

Hmmm...Where lies the answer, you must go.....

The golden foot symbolises the power of people with a lot of money (rich people). Atleast the power they think they have. The azure (blue) field also has to do with richness or superiority. The richness and superiority that Fortunato has (Foot symbolising Fortunato). The serpent represents Montresor, who was once rich, but is now making one last attempt to make retribution for losing his richness and superiority; even with the present greatness holding him down.
