How many movies has SR# 4501 BEEN IN?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I am just asking how many films Southern's 4501 has been in. I do realize that she was in October Sky with a cameo apperance by O.W.L. as the engineer and that she had a N&W Whistle, but I would like to know what other movies(if any)and what different paint schemes she has been in besides the Southern's Green and Gold and Southern's Dress Black.

I can't recall them all, but I will start off with two. "The Color Purple" in SR colors and "Fools Parade" made up as several black B&O engines.

If all your looking for is to see the 4501 in action (I don't blame you. I'm 16 and she was retired before I realized how big of a Southern star she was) , the TVRR's web site (www.tvrail.com) has a small movie gallery of operations over the TVRR. You need a PC to view them though (being a Mac user I found this out the hard way). Good luck!

While green it was relettered 808 from the Ashville and Northwestern. Numbered 808 so that views could be reversed (into town/out of town) and number would stay the same. Also in Mama Floras Family with Cysily Tyson (spelling?) and Queen Lateefa. And also a Eurostrauss commercial for levis 501 jeans (4-501)

Sorry, made a mistake earlier. It was not the 4501 in Mama Flora's Family, that was T.V.R.M.'s other engine 610.

I don't remember with 100% accuracy of the title... I think it was "Frank and Eleanor", or something along those lines, about the life of FDR. She was used to haul FDR's funeral train in the movie, and I _think_ (again, don't hold me to it) that Mr. Claytor may have been at the throtle for the run-by.

Ridin' the rails.

Johnny Cash powered her up the old CofG line in Spalding, Lamar, and Pike county Georgia, if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Elton,

How goes it on the Roosevelt? Ridin' the Rails was filmed around Zebulon on the old SR Atlanta and Florida line to Fort Valley. The Man in Black sat in the engineer's seat and blew the whistle while the "Old Man" (Bill Purdie) stood on a stepbox and ran the engine.

Andrew,... why don't you come out to the Roosevelt RR sometime and visit us? This will probably be the last section left of the M line if NS keeps selling off the training ctr. track. It goes to MP7 now, then is paved, another mile, then cut.

Anyway, the main part was shot in Zebulon, at the depot, the shot next to the engine while it was moving while Johnny Cash was "operating" it was supposedly done between Griffin and Milner on the old CofG line, where the road parallels the line, from what someone who worked for them then said. I don't know where a road paralleled the Ft. Valley line anywhere around Zebulon for that distance.

But I do know that you need to stop by and go for a ride sometime.
