Prepare to Surface

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Last Saturday night I took evasive action and went into dive mode, surfacing only on this forum Thurs pm. During the time spent hidden from all contact I made 2 decisions, (a) Delete RTG from PC (b) Delete Strawberry from PB. Though I only know Clarky from here I am in no doubt he will be pleased, On reflection I felt what the hell was I doing playing infantile mind games with those tossers, who even when confronted with facts would send answers in a confrontational attitude BTW this is not a dig at Jay and her pals but the Strawb does get visited by the unclean. I really was getting at the stage where I did need to knock ten bells oot of a few of them, stupid eh?, anyway that`s a early New Year Resolution. On raising periscope on here and fearing the worst, what do I find?, our own Dame Vera Lynn and Florence Nightingale rolled into one, General Dougal, patching the wounded and lifting the spirits of all of us with her spirited postings, well done gal, caught me offguard anyway,!! Read all the well thought out comments, tactics, team pick etc, apart from the few, we have never really looked at ourselves and our expectations, forget this debate about singing , Monaco have a decent record for a graveyard and this crap about a load of Charlie Churches being an extra man is old hat, unless it is downright intimidating as Galastray. I ask the question across the board , why do Geordies have this urge, compulsion call it whatever to elevate people to hero status in very very early days and then gently push them to the edge before hoying them off, Correct me if I am wrong, Dagleish on appt, Ruud Gullitts appt, YBR little whispers about substitutions now, mind this is followed up by ¬of course Bobby`s knows best, !! Players, Dunc a hero for showing a clenched fist and a snarl after scoring, its called passion you see. Little Kieron Dyer, recognised by England, admired in Serie A , boy` the biz, Lua Lua, bring him on, bring him on standing ovation, he has done nowt as yet, Cordone rave reports pre- season, now?, We want instant heros, sorry in my youth it had to be earned, Wor Jackie. Joe, Big Frank, Bobby Dazzler, Lenny the Lion week in week out, the only one then that we made exception for after 18 games.was Tony Green. Is it not in our nature now to allow players a bed in time or are the financial stakes too high I ask!, Okay rant over, silent running.,

Can't disagree with that. Fair enough giving them a rousing reception on their debut but let them earn the praise.

We're just typical football fans Buff, same as those all over the world. We want instant hereos quick sucsess, a win every week and when we don't some one has to take the blame.

(Warble): "We'll meet again, I know where, I know when. for it'll be this coming Sunday afternoooooooon". "There'll be Magpies over....".

I think you're right with your comments, though - I think it's because instead of the wait making us patient, it's made us impatient so we see people as instant heroes then go off them when they take their time about it. Shearer is actually one of the few people to be spared this. Jim Smith also pointed out recently that we love personalities and that personalities have won us bugger all. We do need to develop a bit of patience, though, because any further change- arounds of personnel could be fatal.

Re: Deleting RTG, top idea, no point in getting into any dialogue with that lot, I've tried in the past and have concluded that the average age of a RTG contributor must be about 13. Re: Heroes, spot on again. Bobby Lee's the only one who gets close at the moment. Re: Instant success, I think the one thing messr's Dalglish and Gullit have taught us is the virtue of patience - no-one on this BB is going to be calling for Young Bobby's head in the next 3 years.

All valid points Buff - and hearty congratulations on exiting that particularly dark place elsewhere on the web. Trust me, you'll feel the better for it, and if you're ever tempted again have two stiff scotches and lie down in a darkened room for several hours with your underpants on back-to-front and cucumber slices on your eye-lids.

As to our herpes heroes complex - I think we've suffered so badly in recent seasons, since KK cast us adrift, and so many big signings have proved to be utter sh*te that we're just desperate for some new heroes who will finally carry us forward.
It's just a outward symtpom of our growing desperation for true credibility.

That's the great thing about being a footballer - especially in a place like Tyneside. You can be a hero, nay a God, which makes you wonder at the attitude of one or two of the mercenaries.

I'm all for hailing them as heroes from day 1, blind faith, and encourage them to become worthy of the worship. I'm also for patience and giving them time to prove themselves, time to grow into the deification bestowed upon them. (I'd still like to see Marcia prove his value for money but it seems unlikely now).

Of course, when they do fail, after a reasonable chance to shine, then they deserve to become public enemy number 1. They will have "earned" a King's ransom under false pretences and deserve the full measure of our disapproval should they fail, especially when the problem is one of attitude.

> of course, when they fail....

Jonno - no one would ever guess you supported NUFC! ;-)
