Another Day in Idiotville

With the Miami-Dade County elections board decision today to count just the 10,600 so-called “undervotes” in order to meet the State Supreme Courts’ mandated deadline Sunday, it is now fundamentally clear that certain votes count for more than others, which doesn't past the equal vote clause of the US Constitution.

Although the decision to suspend a manual record of the entire county looked on surface as being a blow to the Gore camp, it is what they wanted all along, as they seemed convinced and completely comfortable with the idea that many who wanted to vote for Gore cannot seem to figure out how to punch a hole through a piece of paper. Do we really want that type of condescension from the next president, or that type of mentality deciding whom the next president might be?

A report on Dave Letterman last night claimed that 150 votes had just been found in Katherine Harris' hair.

Oops. Hold on. They've just decided not to do any recount in Miami-Dade. Of course, a judge may order them to. But maybe not anyway. Yes, they are. No, they're not. Wow! Is it December 12 already?

From USA Today:

"Election 2000 stretched into Thanksgiving Day without a president- elect Thursday as the fierce tug of war between George W. Bush and Al Gore over Florida's crucial electoral votes finally reached the U.S. Supreme Court. The laborious hand recount resumed in Broward County, as the Gore campaign asked the Florida Supreme Court to order Miami- Dade officials to resume and complete a full handcount or at least the 10,000 undervotes - those with possible indented chads that machines didn't read the first time. ''We believe the Supreme Court didn't want its deadline used as an excuse not to count the vote,'' Gore spokesman Doug Hattaway said. The court has set a 5 p.m. Sunday deadline for counties to send in revised vote counts."

So the Gore camp is asking the State Supreme Court to overturn it's on opinion that is less than three days old. Welcome once again to Idiotville.

The State Court, in a failed effort to create a Solomanized ruling, new precisely that the deadline would be hard to meet and that it would be incumbent upon to victors to pursue with all due measures to meet that deadline. If the State Court for any reason decides to extend this deadline once again, it will send a signal to all involved that this judicial body is ruling by the seat of their pants, with no respect to constitutional law.
