Gary Speed

Ok, then, I think he's our unsung hero and wish we had a song for him. However, I'm aware that some people wouldn't wee on him if he was on fire. What do you lot all think? BTW, he IS a bit enigmatic, isn't he? NEVER in the papers (apart from the Pink where he generally talks about Wales).

Mixed views about Speed. Great for his goals which are invaluable again this season, four already and Beckham is being raved about with 6.

A few people said he gave the ball away to easily on Saturday which is criminal. He talks a good game whenever he is in the Ronni but we invariably lose the game he talks about (?).

I think we could do better but until we try somebody different in there we won't know how valuable he is. The number of games he is available is a credit to the man.

I think he's absolutely superb.....he's constantly carrying the rest of the team.....

Terrific pro, if not a world beater, and importantly never misses a match.
His contribution to the cause over the last 12 months has been massively undervalued by the fans, and he's been one of the 4-6 senior pros who have - and still are - carrying us.

I'm one of the few who's been a fan of GS since we signed him. Agreed, he ain't no worldbeater, but I think he's taken a little for granted. Spent too long saddled with the £5.5m price tag (oops - what's that pound sign doing now?) which of course wasn't his concern.

I've always rated him, I remember arguing on here that Bez had been a great servant to the club but Gary Speed would get us to Wembley (after about the third round of the cup and Bez had played most games for us in Left midfield that season). I agree we need a song. A song for Speedo.

who is this Oliver? whats his tackle like?

Gary Speed took ages to find his form with us, and I was among several 1,000 who wanted to shoot him in the early days (I seem to remember an attempted half volley vs Everton - the Serrant penalty game - and he hit air...looked a total twat).

He has now done a bit of a Barton and worked hard at re-establishing himself and is now nothing less than indispensible. His goal tally alone has been worth the £5.5m. It'll be interesting to see how he manages to work with Bassedas after being tutored in the art of midfield mayhem by Rob Lee.

Swift is still pissed off that we bought him and he's proven to be a damn good player after he'd tipped him to be useless....

mid-table midfielder - says it all.

Why put up with mediocrity?

He is not the worlds greatest but he is a damn site better than he gets credit for, it's the price tag that he has to live up to that gets up peoples noses - forget the money, that's gone, he is has his best games when going forward and so needs a tough tackling partner. Speed wants to stay

I liked him better when he didn't play for us.

On the basis that it's never too late to learn, I think I'll have to do a man marking job on him next time I see him play to try to see what it is about him that has you guys rating him as highly as you do.

Up to now I've seemed to notice him only when he's done something that would have looked better in a clown act.

Speed wants to stay, but I betehe also wants a 50% pay rise for his next three years.

If he's only got a year to go on his contract I would sell him and replace him with a world class midfielder (failing that a cheap Argie)

Sell a 31 yr-old player and you'll get £2mm tops for him, Rik.
The WC midfield player you're after will cost £10mm minimum - where does the other £8mm come from?
