First, I just have to ask... which people? People today, last week, 150 years ago? "The Black Cat was first published in the "United States Saturday Post" in August 1843. To the best of my recollection, it did not draw the attention of the public as well as his mystery stories or his tale, "The Gold Bug". Personally, I have enjoyed the story for years, first as a child and when I read it to my own children. It is an excellent study of the mind of a man consumed by drink and a perverse nature unable to save himself from himself.

Your presumption that it was necessary to caution against a "lie" was unnecessary in itself. The response above was an honest answer. Yet, that being the case, does it make it any more accurate or inaccurate? The bottom line is that it is simply an opinion, right or wrong! : )
