Spped of Digital Technology...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Joel on Software : One Thread

Hi,

Is Digital Technolgy moving with a speed than it should be? Are we unknowlingly compromising quality for it. The way Software sped past Hardware, are we getting things which are of a standard just below what it should have been ? It is considered bad when a Merc or a Ford or a BMW breaksdown but forgiven when an OS (any one for that matter ) crashes. Does Digital Technology (Software in Pariticular) needs to learn something from Automobile Technolgy ?

u'r response please....

What it comes down to what do the users want... functions or quality. If they want more and more capability without spending time and money on testing then they will get products that are prone to arcane errors. If they want quality and are willing to spend money but not time, then they will get less functional products that are more stable. Ask your marketing department what they want as the next release of your product... a version that has no additional functions but is 100% stable or a version that has dozens of additional functions but is may be less stable that the previous version. Then ask them whether they are willing to wait 6 months while you improve the stability of the product and make it more fault tolerant.

Hi Ray, i am an software engineer...IT Fan.... what i mean is that we are not making cheap products..... i just meant that we are taking things out of oven before it is fully baked.Merc can release a new feature and sell it even if is not fully tested, but they don't do that. But we say features sells and do that. sell that when it is done satisfactorly that's all. don't hurry up.
