Calif. Diablo Canyon Unit 1 nuke trips off line Monday November 20, 10:54 AM EST LOS ANGELES, Nov 20 (Reuters) - The 1,100 megawatt Unit 1 at the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in central California tripped off line early Monday, the plant's operator, Pacific Gas and Electric, said in a recorded update.

The utility said the reactor tripped at 0400PST/0700EST and had been safely shut down. No estimate for when the unit will return to service was immediately available.

Early Monday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in its daily plant status report, said the unit was operating at 46 percent power, up from 12 percent early Friday.

The unit, in Avila Beach, Calif., was conducting power ascension testing as it continued to exit its Oct. 8 refueling outage, the report said.

Meanwhile, the adjacent 1,100-MW Unit 2 continued to operate at its full capacity, the report said.

Earlier Monday the California Independent System Operator (ISO), which operates most of the state's power grid, issued a stage one emergency, calling for voluntary power conservation.

Pacific Gas and Electric is a unit of PG&E Corp
