Many people thought Poe was ill either mentally or emotionally. While it is not proven, I think that he was creative and eccentric, and virtually brilliant in his literature.

Poe lived a life of misery, he missed the love of his biological parents and was hated by his foster father. He resorted to alcoholism and gambling, problems piled up and he was only about 20 years old then! Having a real bad youth can shape a really distorted mind can't it? But not all expressions of inner torture convey an eccentric mind! Actually he has turned his morbid genius into pieces of good literature...
