I will ALWAYS get behind the lads but right now I feel like sh*t! Is that bridge in place yet?

Misplaced arrogance. That's why we lost. We might be a better 'footballing' side, but that's not everything. The players have got a slap in the face for being too arrogant, and us fans have as well. Sunderland didn't exacly need much motivation to beat us, did they. I know I won't be popular, but we're too cocky by half sometimes, believing we should win by some sort of divine right.

Sorry, but I'm still feeling sorry for mesel'. Sorry. A great weekend, including over 700 mile drive, was spoiled by a bunch of useless tw@ts. Apart from the first 10-15 minutes, we were not worthy of the B&W shart. We capitualted. We gave them too much space in midfield and we carried too many passengers. In the second half, we were second best. Shearer's miss just topped it all. I'll tell you one thing, I'm so p1$$ed off I'm not even going on Saturday. Sorry 'n' aal that.

That's two of us then Screach!

Sorry Gav.

We should win by divine right Windy. However, the reality is that SAFC have taken 7 points out of the last 9 from us, and 6 out of 6 at SJP. That makes them top dogs - and that gripes me. It also griped another 40 odd thousand Geordies at SJP on Saturday (got to exclude the corporate spectators who went to watch 'the spectacle', and those who "support all of the NE teams", and want to see them all at the top of the PL - tossers!!), and another million Geordies around the World.

Nothing arrogant about it - we just expect that those who wear the 'black and white' against the barber's poles care about it as much as we do.

Adding insult to injury, who heard the commentator call Domi a dummy?

Missed penalty, Solano's miss and Domi the dummy, nice f...ing day.

Does this mean we're going to the champion's league? I thought I heard on here about a mackem loss in exchange for a CL spot.

didn't hear that, Pete. When was it? Mind, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth(and an unfortunate couch being kicked repeatedly) most of the 2nd half(barring the momentary stunned silence after Al missed the penalty) so didn't pay all that much attention to the commentary.

-- Anonymous, November 20, 2000

I can vouch for Pete. The commentator (Crocker?) said something about "Will x be a Y or will Domi be a dummy". To be honest, I didn't think he actually meant to say that Domi was a dummy (tho who am I to disagree with such an accurate observation?).

More to the point, I think he'd been on the <>John Motson school of commentating and had his stock list of phrases he had to use. Domi and dummy were obviously just too good to miss. Bliddy good job Andy Hunt wasn't playing for us then, innit?

Screach,

Sorry you had to see this crap and drive through 3 states to do so, what a disappointment. Apart from the 2 horror show hours on saturday, how was the windy city?

-- Anonymous, November 20, 2000

It's not a matter of Life or Death is it?

If it was it might be easier to cope with ...

(With apologies to Mr Shankley)

PeteT, At least I can console myself in the fact I didn't have to drive across 150 states (or whatever it is) to meet you. No, that doesn't sound right - I didn't have to drive so far to NY to see a cr@p game. I guess I cudda headed SW and got one of those, but with a lot warmer weather!

Chicago was great - far more fun driving the I90 Tollway than the Western Bypass. Best enjoyment I've had since we had a karting event from work! Hospitality was fantastic. I can honestly recommend it. If ever your (or anybody else) is in Chicago, look up Syme and Barb. Best weekend you'll have in a long time. Just keep off the politics and make sure he doesn't take you to see ManU or Toon play and you'll have a crackin' time ;-))

However the most dramatic part was kept until the end. Wisconsin in the middle of a whiteout isn't the most fun I've ever had (well, at least not at the time). But it will go down as one of the most memorable. Neverseen so many dead deers in my life. And not aal of them were on the roadside. Barry Venison anyone??

Going back to my earlier post, and Clarky's response, I'm not saying we shouldn't be f@cking angry and frustrated - we all are. I'm also not trying to lessen the passion of the rivalry. But why did some of the players not seem to give their all? I can't help feeling that it's because they thought they ought to win it by dint of them being better 'footballers' - ie without having to graft too hard. And it's this attitude that's resulted in us getting turned over, by Sunderland (and other teams). And it's not just the players. There's an element of this complacency in us supporters too. In case anyone forgets, we've not won anything yet, and haven't for ages. So what the f@ck are we doing tarting around as if we should beat some teams just by right? OK, I know most of it is just bravado and people's frustration is coming from the fact that when we were up against it, the players didn't respond and raise their game as much as we felt they should, as much as say we would have done if we were professional footballers. But it's too late in the middle of a game. The attitude needs to be right beforehand.

Windy, I'm not going to try and defend the players here as I know you are feeling betrayed by them. But I will try to understand what happened.

We passed them off the pitch early on and they couldn't get the possession, so our lads thought they could carry this throughout the game. Obviously they couldn't and who does in a 90-minute game of football? Conversely there is little point in getting too charged up before a game and losing your head and messing the basics of passing up. I know getting a bit psyched up would help at the crucial time, which they didn't.

They lack direction and Leadership, someone needs to be there doing and saying all the right things. Shearer can't do that from where he is, the rest of the players look to him for leadership and he is getting battered around by Thome unpunished by the ref, heads will drop and even more so after a goal or two like that, then Shearer gets his penalty saved.

I'm not blaming Shearer but we should have someone in the middle of the park that can influence those around them, we don't.

Until Lee goes back into midfield like last season or Acuna gets confidence to start shouting at his team mates.

-- Anonymous, November 21, 2000

Christ, anyone would think were Moan Utd supporters or Makems. WE ARE THE GEORDIES. We have had far bigger humiliations and bounced back - two effing Cup Finals where we rolled over like a couple of Bigg Market slappas to name but two MONSTROUS humiliations. We have a whole season to get into Europe and sing "Stand up if you're in Europe" at the rat-shagging primate gets. HOWAY THE LADS. PS. I'm not denying our constitutional rights to expect more BTW.

-- Anonymous, November 21, 2000

Not to mention the Liverpool and Man City finals in the 70s Dougal.

-- Anonymous, November 21, 2000

... and then there's all those FA Cup defeats in the 60's in the third round never mind the final. Peterbro, Bedford, Carlisle - sheesh - why do we bother? :-)))

-- Anonymous, November 21, 2000

Still sorry

-- Anonymous, November 21, 2000

In protest, I am not going to another game until I am back in England!

-- Anonymous, November 22, 2000

Good on ya Gus, a man of principle!
