PA News:

The world’s first rotating bridge is due to be lifted into place tomorrow (Sunday) by a giant floating crane which is taller than Big Ben. The complex operation, previously cancelled because of the recent bad weather, will go ahead if conditions remain favourable. The Ł22 million Gateshead Millennium Bridge will span the River Tyne to create a pedestrian and cycling link between the ever-developing 250 million Gateshead Quays and neighbouring Newcastle’s quayside. The unique design of the structure allows it to rotate to allow boats to pass underneath and the movement of the bridge has been likened to the blinking of an eye. It will be positioned just a few hundred yards downstream (east) of the famous Tyne Bridge. The 850-tonne steel bridge will make a six-mile journey from the AMEC construction yard in Wallsend along the river, ready to be fitted into its moorings at about 9.30am (Sunday). The huge crane, which will have just two-and-a-half-metres clearance from both riverbanks during its journey, will be on site all day and will head back to Wallsend on Monday morning. Gateshead council leader George Gill said: “The sight of this massive crane lowering the bridge into place will be a major feat of engineering. It will be one of those historic occasions people will be able to tell their grandchildren about. “The Gateshead Millennium Bridge will instantly become a world famous landmark symbol, which shows the vision we have in this region.” Roger Wilson, contracts manager of crane operators SMIT International, said: “We carry out unusual lifting operations all around the world, but this is a unique operation as it's the largest of its kind performed anywhere in the world.” The Gateshead Millennium Bridge will be the seventh bridge spanning the River Tyne between Gateshead and Newcastle.
