CD-R or CDR-W

What is the physical difference between a CDR and a CDR-W? Why does a VCD CDR-W work on my Sony DVD player and a CDR does not? Would using a different encoder and/or VCD burning software help? The CDR works on the computer.

Using a different encoder/burner/software will not make it play.
If you read your Sony manual you will see it will NOT play cdr.
I read mine and went OFF!!!!!
No matter what cdr media you try. CDRW is closer optical to a dvd, so that is why it works in your sony. Go to www.vcdhelper.com and checkout the list of what players will read (if at all) cdr/cdrw. Some will read cdr & cdrw. Some will read only cdr, some only cdrw. Sony's usually will play a cdrw. I threw out my sony and bought an Apex 703a. It plays cdr/cdrw dvd/vcd/svcd/mp3. It has 5.1 sound and is even a 3 disk changer. It was $50.00 usd cheaper than my sony and works a million times better. I was a diehard sony fan until I found out it will not play homebrewed media.
