Question about hand cranked food grinders (misc)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have two Universal brand cast food grinders. My question is this , after use and cleaning, I oil them with olive oil for storage, but they still show signs of some rusting. Would it hurt the augers and blades if I coated all the parts and cured them in the oven as I do skillets?

Jay, I'm not sure about curing them in the oven. I have a grinder like yours and all I do to maintain it is after grinding I take the blade off and dust it out. Next time I want to grind I run about a half handful of grain through it to get rid of any dust and just throw that to the chickens and grind as normal. You are probably getting rust from washing it. I'd buff it good with steel wool and apply a light coat of oil and then use it frequently and keep it dry...it ought to season out fairly well.
