My New Job (& how it will affect B&W World)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

Hi Folks,

I am proud to announce that I have accepted the position of Managing Editor of Popular Photography. I start on Monday, November 20. It's a big job--I will be responsible for making sure the magazine is published accurately and on schedule--and will be involved in decisions that will affect the editorial balance and (hopefully) be able to do some writing as well.

And I expect to get it all done in time to pick my kids up from daycare.

The bad news is that I will need to step back from Black & White World for a while, at least until I have learned and feel comfortable with my job. Therefore, much of the content of Black & White World is going on hiatus. I will not be updating the site on a regular basis, although I will try to add fresh content every so often. I wish I could continue to be involved in B&W World at the same level as before, but I don't see how I'll have the time.

I also will not have the time to moderate these forums. I have been in touch with individuals and will be handing off moderating responsibilities shortly. I hope to have an announcement tomorrow about a new moderator for several key forums.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for participating, and I encourage you to continue to do so! I am constantly amazed at the level of expertise that can be found here and am heartened that so many people are willing to share their knowledge. I'd start mentioning names but I'm afraid of leaving someone out, so I'd just like to thank those of you who are constantly helping people out.

So thanks to all, and keep talkin'!

Congratulations to the job! Almost everyone has an opinion about Popular Photography. I read it a lot a few years ago and found it useful then.

Mason, congratulation for your new job ! You can bring new ideas to Popular Photography, which is reputely the largest photo magazine. Hope you still keep posting to the B&W World forums.

Congratulations, Mason! I'm sure you will be a good influence.

Wish you the best. I guess there will not be any more fine art figure work in the pages of Pop photography.

Contgrat's! and good luck with those deadlines, should be fun although no doubt hard work!

BTW, does this place need moderating? We're all very civilised :)

Good Luck

Good Luck. I will look for you in the articles and editorials. Maybe you can throw a little B&W in every now and then. Rodney

-- Rodney Durrett (rodney.durrett@adtran.com), November 16, 2000.

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes. Ed Buffaloe has agreed to take over moderation of this forum, as well as a couple of others. I know Ed has been contributing on an almost daily basis for quite a while and I trust his judgement.

I will try to check into the forums as my time allows. And yes, I hope to be able to sneak some coverage of B&W into Pop if I am given the opportunity!

Cheers, Mason

Well, that's a positive move for PP, and I hope a positive move for you too!

Just try and keep those guys on their toes - but don't spoil the fun of searching for "this month's technical error" - looking for it is sometimes more fun than reading the rest of the magazine (sorry, couldn't resist that one!).

Good luck to you Mason! I guess I have a reason to Pop Photo again.

-- robert orofino (rorofino@iopener.net), November 17, 2000.

A belated congratulation Mason, though I haven't seen Popular Photography this side of the pond for some while now.

Mason;

Excellent news! I just subscribed to Pop Photo last week after droping my subscription several years ago as a protest about Cambridge Camera's practices. I hope that B&W world will continue as a great forum for B&W workers.

A belated thank you to everyone who has written both publicly and privately. I appreciate the supportive send-off!

In the short time I've been at Pop (2 weeks) I have two observations: 1) that I've come in the midst of several key staff changes, which will I think help the magazine in the long run, and 2) the commute is as grinding as I remember from my days at Modern Photography, and my free time is even more limited than I expected--but they're making it worth the effort.

You probably won't see my byline there for a while--first I need to get a handle on the basic job of being a managing editor. There are lots of parts to it.

On another topic...I am happy to report that I'm very close to getting someone to take over the B&W World Top Ten List and expect to announce that person within the week. I'm glad to see the B&W World forums haven't missed a beat--great job, Ed!
