since that question was posted several months ago, I don't know if it's any good to answer now, but I have just discovered this site.

The plot of Premature Burial is that the narrator spends the first half of the story detailing how it is possible for a person to appear to be dead while still alive, giving several examples. He then describes his own experience of being buried alive, his obsession with the idea, and how he came to believe he had been buried alive but was only in a small bunk on a ship.

It can be said that the idea behind the story is how forceful the power of self-suggestion can be upon a tormente

Well, this is how understand it,he thought that being buried alive was scary and he experienced it so he also knew it was scary. But, most of his ideas come from Dreams and nightmares he has had so maybe that was his experience. well there you go.

This story is about Poe's dream. Since he had a preoccupation with death, he wanted to grow out of it like the narrator of the story.

I wrote a 15 page paper on Poe's life and on the contrasting of 3 of his stories when I was in high school. I picked Poe because he is the best Author to ever be born. His genious is why we have mystery stories today. If Poe had never been alive or never wrote, then many spin off series like Sherlock Holmes would never have been invented. Also we would not have had really good movies like The Bone Collector, and The Usual Suspects and many other great movies. I suggest you read Murders in the Rue Morge. You owe a lot to Poe and his brilliance.
