Hi, Enrique,

I was reading all the information you gave someone on this 50 week old thread! I came across something very interesting you wrote. You said, "The Pope was ordained a Priest on Nov.1 1946."

That means TODAY, is the 55 annivesary of our Holy Pope, being Ordained a Priest.

Happy 55 Years, Pope John PauL 2ND.

God Bless our Pope.

For those who had not heard he is going to publish a book of poetry shortly provisionally titled "The Rome Triptych. Apparently it will include thoughts on his sucessor and will b "a poetic meditation about the themes of finality, a last will of sorts" Should be intresting.

Could anyone tell me the role the Solvay Chemical Plant played during the Occupation, and how it benefited the Nazis? Were the chemicals used to murder the Jews more effectively? Beyond an 'escape' from a labor camp for the current pope, what exactly did he do in the plant? Did his work aid the Nazis? Why didn't he resist? Is he a Nazi collaborator to this day? How and when was he first associated with Cardinal Ratzinger, and what role did Ratzinger play during WWII? Any and all answers will be appreciated.

-- JOhn Zborowski (marsmore@earthlink.net), July 31, 2003.

Ernest Solvay (1838 - 1922) Inventor, Chemist, best known for his development of a commercially viable ammonia-soda process for producing soda ash (sodium carbonate), widely used in the manufacture of such products as glass and soap.

"Could anyone tell me the role the Solvay Chemical Plant played during the Occupation, and how it benefited the Nazis?"

See above. Solvay is ordinary commercial business that preceded Nazis and still exists. No special benefit.

"Were the chemicals used to murder the Jews more effectively?"

No. Only a bigot would ask. 99.9% of all chemicals manufactured had nothing to do with Holocaust, but you had to come up with this weird idea, did you?

"Beyond an 'escape' from a labor camp for the current pope, what exactly did he do in the plant?"

Respectable, ordinary work. You should do the same.

"Did his work aid the Nazis?"

No. But your sick questions aid people who hate Catholics, by trying to paint a cloud over the pope's head.

"Why didn't he resist?"

There was nothing improper to resist. Why didn't YOU resist trying to damage a fellow Pole?

"Is he a Nazi collaborator to this day?"

Another sick question. Never was a collaborator, is not now, and never will be. The man has been pope for 25 years. If he did wrong during the war, it wouldn't have remained hidden for 25 years, waiting for some bigot like you to expose it.

"How and when was he first associated with Cardinal Ratzinger, and what role did Ratzinger play during WWII?"

May have met at Vatican Council in 1960s, where pope was a bishop and cardinal was a priest-theologian-advisor to another bishop. Cardinal was no Nazi. Born in 1927, was 6 when Hitler came to power, and entered a minor seminary at age 12. In '43, when 16, was forced out of seminary and into anti-aircraft corps. In '44, forced into basic training for infantry, but was quickly captured and put in a POW camp. In mid-'45, went back to seminary.
