Silver Maine Coon

Hi

I will be getting a maine coon kitten in jan 2001. I will be going to have my first viewing of him on fri 1th Nov 2000. What I would like to know is what to look for. I would love to own a large maine coon cat, with good temperament. I understand that the silvers do not get as big as the others why is this? I have been told by the breeders that he has a big head, good chin, big ears with lynx tips. How can you determine if you will have a nice sized cat. He will be 6 weeks old what type of weight should he be, and then when I pick him up at 13 weeks what should he be then? I hope that when I do go to see him he will be what I am looking for. I have been to a few shows and I know that I just love the silver lines. This kitten is the only one left out of a litter of 5. I have been looking for a silver for a long time now, and hope that this is it. I will be paying B#300 for this and hope to come away with a nice cat, that will eventually grow to a good size. I will be having him spayed at 8-0 months.

Hope you can help

Last year, when my creme tabby Maine Coon died of kidney failure, I knew I had to get another one. I got on the internet and did some research on the silvers. I was also told that they don't get as big as the browns. I ended up getting a beautiful shaded silver male. He was three and a half months when we brought him home and weighed 7.5 lbs. at his first vet visit. At that time the vet told me he was going to be a "big boy." I had him neutered at eight mos.

His name is Silver Shadow. I call him Shadow and he is gorgeous. Shadow is a year and a half now and weighs 19 lbs. He is not fat but very tall and long with a tail to die for. He has a sweet face and large tufted ears with lynx tips and large paws. In the morning when he wakes up he stretches up the side of the wall and can reach the light swtich.

So, I don't think you should listen to people saying that the silvers don't get as big. If possible check out the parents. Shadow's mother was about average size but very affectionate. His father was a large cat and also had a beautiful, long bushy tail. I think my boy has the best of both. Even if he is spoiled and likes to wake up at 4:00 am. When you have a 19 lb. cat climbing on you and licking your face and hair at that time of the morning, there's no going back to sleep because he wants company and breakfast. He's also a talker.

Just be patient. You'll find him but do look at the parents if possible.

Hi,

My husband and I acquired a Silver/White Tabby MC November 5, 2000. At her first vet (11/15/00) visit she weighed 4 lbs. We had her spayed on 12/23/00, she weighed 5lbs. She weighed in at 9 lbs about two weeks ago (she's now 5 1/2 months). So I also don't think that the silver's are smaller. She is also very long and very tall with a purfect tail! Is a mush and loves to be around me and my husband and our 7 yr old domestic short hair. Good luck with your new baby!

To Chenelle: Did you ever get your silver? How is he/she doing? This is an update to my November posting. My "Silver" Shadow is going to be 2 yrs. the end of April (4-27-99). He weighs over 20 lbs. and is hugh. He isn't fat until he rolls on his back and his belly looks big. I'm hoping he doesn't get much bigger because 20+lbs. on your head at 4:00 a.m. is something you can't ignore.

I went to a cat show in Long Beach last Sunday( I think it was Cat Fanciers)anyway, it was a "silver specialty" show. I saw about five silver maine coons and none of them could beat "Shadow." I took pictures and they all said I should be showing him. I called my breader and told her about the response I got to Shadow's pictures and she said she'd love for me to show him; that she would help.

How do you convince a 2 yr. old cat to be a show cat? I know he would panic and I can't see putting him or me through the stress of the car trip and a show.

The moral is that silvers do get big but you have to check out the parents and make sure your buying from a reputible breeder.
