WebPosted Mon Nov 13 17:38:39 2000 ET FREDERICTON - The left engine on the Canadian Alliance campaign plane failed as it made a hard landing in Fredericton on Monday.

The pilot came on the aircraft loudspeaker to say he thought the problem may have been a blown tire, but passengers reported seeing flames on the left engine.

A maintenance worker later confirmed to reporters that the left engine had been blown.

Alliance Leader Stockwell Day joked to reporters: ""It's the left wing all the time."

There was a flash and a bang as the plane was descending. The jet did land and taxi normally. No one was injured.

The plane was bringing Stockwell Day, his campaign team, and journalists from Quebec City.
