By CP HALIFAX -- A CanJet 737 jet had to return to the Halifax airport minutes after takeoff due to a malfunction with its landing gear indicator yesterday.

The discount-airline flight, which was bound for Toronto and Ottawa, landed without incident shortly after midnight, after its undercarriage returned to the normal landing position.

Ken Rowe, chairman of the IMP Group International, which owns CanJet, said the incident wasn't unusual in the airline business. But he said it "was the first I've heard of an undercarriage problem" since the airline started up in September.

CanJet provides about 250 discount-priced flights each week between Halifax and Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Winnipeg.

Rowe said that shortly after take-off, the pilot attempted to close the landing gear and the plane's indicator lights showed that the left and right undercarriage hadn't locked into position inside the plane.

After a second attempt failed, the pilot decided to turn around and land the aircraft.
