I remember Talk of the Tyne doing a piece on the derby and calling it 'Memoirs of the Pigery' I wish I still had it.

It had great lines such as 'their fans had faces like overflowing ashtrays' and 'as our bus pulled the Slovina of the North East'

Classic!

1985, and we are desperatley trying to stay in the top division. New Years Day derby.

Our limited resources are decimated by the loss of our only decent centre half in Glenn Roeder, our only decent (sad times) midfielder in David McCreery and our only bit of true class in Chrissie Waddle. Some unkown loanee Ian Baird plays at centre forward is playing. We don't stand a chance. Won't be able to get the ball in midfield, won't be able to stop them when they attack, and no one to score up front.

Come the hour commeth the men. Wes Saunders is outstanding at full back. Up front Peter Beardsley scores a hat trick and even takes the piss by missing a pen. They have a player sent off (?). I'm in heaven.

My best memory was standing in the Fullwell end in Shearer's first season at the last derby at Joker Park. It was the season away fans were banned but five of us managed to get in and we were stood by the big exit at the back. We went one down to a penalty and it stayed like that until halftime. We equalised near the start of the second half and the ground was silent apart from one bloke who stood up in the stand to our left. His face went from a beeming smile to that "Oh bollocks" look but thankfully the stewards got to him before the filthy inbreads did. Pedro got the winner soon afterwards and we couldn't contain ourselves and went mental. A huge gap opened up in front of us and we turned around and legged it out of the ground closely followed by about twenty meatheads. Thankfully as we were all mid - late teens we got away but when that goal went it it was the best feeling i've ever had at football

Great story Stu. It just isn't possible not to react is it?
I've had this problem several times but never in mackemland, and fortunately at Clubs whose supporters have a bit more class than the primates down the road.
I leaped up from anonymity once at Anfield when the Toon scored, and was attacked for the rest of the game with vicious humour. Great people scousers, most of em anyway.
Couldn't take that risk at OT or at Elland Rd., for instance.

I understand perfectly about OT Clarky....they're all bloody Kung Fu experts those asians..... ;))

No offence intended to any asians.....unless of course they're Man Ure fans....

Did the over elaborate celebration thing at ayresome park once. Not advisable in any circumstances

Other than for FAC Semi's, the last time I was at OT was for the 1-1 when that curly Norwegian git scythed Rob Lee down as he was about to score the winner.
I was a guest in a corporate box - at least 75% of which were full of B&W fans. These boxes were only just above the heads of the "punters" outside.
It was a very weird and somewhat scary experience as at every conceivable opportunity they would all turn around, faces contorted in hatred - men, women (well, sort of!) and even the kids - and scream, curse and bang on the window.
Me, bedecked in B&W, toasting them with a glass of champers, probably didn't help - but there's no doubt if they could have gotten hold of us they would have torn us limb from limb.
Wild animals in their natural habitat, indeed.

Crowded round a B&W TV set on the outskirts of Leeds to watch Liam O'Brien's freekick.....

The onl.y time I've ever been in the away end, well the seats anyway, was when we played Rotherham in the cup a few years ago. I went to the game with a friend of my fathers (my father was born and bred in Rotherham) and we were in the seats. It got a bit heated at the start as there were a load of Newcastle fans in the home ned. Apparently they'd gone down and bought loads of tickets as they were cheaper for the home end than the away.
So before kick off the Rotherham fans charged the Newcastle who promptly ran onto the pitch to the away end. Anyway this guy runs down about six or seven rows and hurls abuse at the Newcastle fans before returning to his seat. Well during the game I heard a guy behind me saying 'I think that lads a geordie and stuff like that, but there was nothing sinister involved. Anyway we score and I'm on my feet jumping up and down before quickly sitting down. Then they score and I clap politely, before we score another and I jump up and down again. This was ruled offside and this tw*t runs down from his seat with something along the lines of 'We can't settle it on the pitch we'll settle it here', obvioulsy I start bricking it, but Jim (my dad's friend) just turned round to the guy, as cool as you like and said' listen, son, this lad's uncle is the greatest player ever to play for Rotherham, he's more Rotherham than you'll ever be, now sit down and shut up and show the lad some respect'. Which was quickly followed by loads of who was your uncle, oh yes I remember him great guy he was , how is he? etc etc etc and the guy who'd wanted to punch my lights out kind of melted into the background. Anyway, for the rest of the game I was treated kind of like royalty (or as close as you'd get in South Yorkshire).

Kegsy, Has your father any memories of the greatest player to come out of Rotheram, my hero, Len White ?, he was not your uncle was he?

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2000

My uncle was Ken Keyworth, who went on to play for Leicester, scoring in the 63 cup final. He played for Rotherham in the 1950's, I'm not sure about Len White, but I would guess that my father would have either seen him play or met him or both.
