Sam,

The tale, "The Masque of the Red Death" was written (most likely) while Poe was living and working in Philadelphia. It was first published in Graham's Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine in May of 1842 with the title "The Mask of the Red Death, a Fantasy." It was reprinted in the Literary Souvenir in June of 1842 with the "Mask" title. The title was later modified to "The Masque of the Red Death" when it was again reprinted in the Broadway Journal in July of 1845.

Regards,
