In a recent lecture in American Lit., our instructor informed the class that Poe did indeed experiment with opium for a short time because he believed it would enhance his perception and creativity; he eventually realized that it had the opposite effect and discontinued its use. She mentioned that Poe had a disorder which caused him to pass out for quite a while after consuming only one or two drinks. He wasn't considered an alcoholic though, as he did not make it a habit. It is unfortunate that many instructors paint Poe as an insane addict when in fact, it seems that he was very much sane and very much a genius whose influence remains strong in our critical evaluation of literature today.
