Hi Cindy,

A rabies emergency was declared here in Trumbull County in eastern Ohio two years ago. "Biscuit Bombers" chartered by the state and county targeted rural woodlands and forests. At any public event or state park where pets were allowed, you had to show proof of rabies vaccination for your pet or they weren't allowed in.

It seems to have had the desired effect. The reports of rabid raccons and also skunks, has dropped off considerably. While not "out of the woods" yet, the program produced positive results. That, and the cooperation of hunters, farmers and the general public who remained alert and reported sick animals.

They've been doing that in South Texas for several years and I think it's been pretty successful, from what I've read. We've had a major outbreak of rabies, mostly found in dead skunks, up here in North Texas the past several months. I haven't heard of any "biscuit program" for us up here but they need to do something.
