Saudis Open Border With Iraq The Associated Press, Tue 7 Nov 2000RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) B Saudi Arabia has opened its border with Iraq for the first time since the 1991 Gulf War to facilitate exports, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
The English-language daily Arab News quoted Abdul-Rahman al-Zamil, chairman of the Exports Development Center, as saying the move would cut the cost of transporting Saudi products to Iraq in half.
Saudi companies have signed contracts worth nearly $600 under an exception to U.N. sanctions that allows Iraq to export oil to pay for food, medicine and humanitarian supplies, the paper said.
The sanctions were imposed on Iraq to punish it for invading Kuwait in 1990.
