The point: Why schedule a celebration of his Senate victory if he really thought there was any good chance of he and Al Gore winning the presidential election?

Because if he doesn't schedule a celebration of his Senate victory, and Gore ends up losing the election, he won't be able to organize a Senate victory celebration in time. If Gore wins, he can always cancel it.
