Is white bread really all that good for you?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Bread.com FAQ : One Thread

I know that white bread isn't as good for you as whole grain bread, but does it have ant nutritional value at all? If so, what value does it have? I would like to know as much about white bread as I possible can.

White bread is usually enriched. This is because the flour has not only been stripped of its germ and fiber, but it has been bleached, frequently through bromation. This enrichment can be fully analysed by reading the nutritional information panel on the bag. While you are looking at this, check out the saturated and/or hydrogenated oil. This is the bad stuff. If you want to live a long, healthy life, keep away from this. So basically, if you can find a white bread that is enriched but contains no saturated and/or hydrogenated oil, it is not too unhealthy, but it is little better than a sugar coated vitamin pill. Get real. Eat whole foods. Especially greens and vegetables.
