The concert photos posted below inspired me to post some of my old stuff. This particular shot is quite different than the concert photography below, but it something that I had a good print of.

That's The Red Hot Chili Peppers!!!!! Great shot even if I don't think the band is main point of interest. It's the girl with the fancy barrett (sp?) in her hair lower right......

excellent shot! it captures the energy of the concert scene wonderfully; even more telling is the fact that this image clearly demonstrates that with a few exceptions even "famous" bands are ultimately only background music for human interaction.

Not much of a pit there, seems a bit tame.

It is pretty neat that it captures the "crowd as event" part of it.

I just read a book, "Among the Thugs," about these hooligans who go to British soccer matches. They don't much care who wins, or even what happens during the game, as long as they get to go crazy and hurt people and break things.

That's what this photo reminds me of, even if there is no violence.

Thanks for the comments.

This pit was relatively tame, though I usually shoved my way out as quickly as possible when it really started to heat up. When things really start slamming, it takes both hands free to survive.

I've only encounted thugs once or twice in situations like this. The band will usually direct security to go throw them out, or the other people in the pit will get sick of their bullshit and take them out (when you're surrounded by a hundred people trying to smash you in the head, it generally doesn't take long for you to go down). It's really kind of amazing how self-policing such unruly-seeming "mobs" actually are. . .

Here's another shot that has more focus on the band.
