FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- An American Eagle jet carrying 45 people was forced to make an emergency landing Friday after taking off from the Fort Wayne International Airport.

The regional jet landed smoothly about 4:20 p.m., after the pilot noticed fuel leaking from a fuel cap over one of the plane's wings.

The jet, bound for the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, was forced to circle northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio for more than an hour to burn off about 8,800 pounds of fuel before landing.

The plane was scheduled to take off at 1:30 p.m., but didn't get off the ground until 3 p.m. The captain reported the problem shortly after takeoff.

No injuries were reported.
