OK - Press problems cause late delivery of Tulsa World By World's own Service 11/3/00 Continued problems with both of the Tulsa World's new Wifag presses caused late delivery Thursday and Friday.

"We apologize to our subscribers, carriers and advertisers for the late delivery," said Robert E. Lorton III, president of World Publishing Company. "These periodic Wifag press problems are not acceptable."

World press crews and Wifag technicians have been working night and day to pinpoint the problems on the two new offset presses.

The shaftless, offset presses are operated by a series of motors that are driven by computers. Recent software upgrades to computers may be causing repeated newsprint tears while the press is running at the top speed of 70,000 newspapers per hour. The violent shredding of newsprint throughout the press can take as long as 90 minutes to repair.

In an effort to prevent the tears, press operators have been running the presses at much slower speeds.

"We are moving our deadlines earlier and we are continuing to work on the problems. We appreciate the indulgence of our subscribers, carriers and advertisers," Lorton said.
