Chinese coal mine fire kills 13

SHANGHAI: A fire in a coal mine has killed 13 miners in southern China and injured 27 others, a mine official said Friday.

The fire broke out November 1 in the Pinghu Coal Mine in Jiangxi province, said the official of the Fengcheng County Mine Bureau, who would give only his surname, Chen.

The rest of the 100 miners underground at the time were rescued uninjured or escaped on their own, said the official, who would give only his surname, Chen.

China has the world's deadliest coal mines. Many lack proper ventilation and fire equipment, and enforcement of safety standards is poor.

More than 2,730 miners were reported killed in accidents in the first half of this year alone. (AP)
