What does England feel about the presidentia elections going on over in the US right now. How are the candidates coming across, who would England prefer? As an expat living in Chicago, being unable to vote I have to come down on Gores side, for the reason that I think Bush does not have the foreign policy to go with his empty promises. Coat and hat on rack, being removed.

Gore = gory

Bush = scares the living daylights out of me. Like a slightly more intelligent [therefore much more dangerous] version of Reagan. WW3 here we come...

To be honest Syme, if it wasn't for the fact that it's an election for the World's Strongest Man or something like that, it would be a farce. Am I right in thinking Bush hasn't been out of the good ol' U S of A? As for Gore.................Blimey.

It will be interesting for me (did I tell you all I'm coming over to check on fair play during the voting?) to see it in all it's gory.

It basically seems to boil down to: Gore has a clue about policies, but Bush comes across better (ie talks a good game) so he'll probably win. Or is that a wee bit simplistic?;@)

That would be about right, GJ. And Screach, it should be an interesting week when you're over here. Not sure where Minnesota stands right now, but if it's a swing state, you'll find nothing but political ads on tv. Actually Snickers is running a brilliant ad nationwide right now where a cartoon donkey and cartoon elephant pop up on a guy's shoulders "debating". "I'm the same shoe size as my father", "Big deal, I invented the internet and lots of other stuff too", "I have my father's name, I even look like my father", "Kiss me, I'm on tv", "My dad and I wear the same pants", "I invented pants". That ad is the only thing I'm going to miss about this campaign. ;-)

I personally don't give a shoite about what's happening in the good ol' US of A. We have enough problems back here in Mother England to worry about the Colonies ffs!!!

Whatever Pressie they get will still carry the trait of other US Presidents in the fact that they really do think they are at the centre of the Universe. Peace keepers extrodinaire while letting 10 year olds run amock with "shooters"

Naaaa...fcku 'em. Uneduacted and self centred.

-- Anonymous, November 03, 2000

'Uneduacted' ?

Bit sweeping that, LR. Whatever you think about them, the US is the centre of the universe, whether we like it or not.

Major problems here have absolutely no effect on what goes on in the rest of the world. Major problems in the states send ripples everywhere.

Sweeping it may be mate but that's the way I see it. The only reason ripples in the States make waves here is because the sods make it their business.

I have no interest in the Americans. They are just an amalgamation of rejects and escapees anyway. No history to speak of...no culture and no manners, yet they manage to become supreme beings of the Universe. Fer crying out loud, they chgange history in films to suit their own purposes and egos and they have..as their current president and most powerful man in the world, a complete and utter wanker with the integrity of any ship at the bottom of Scappa Flow.

Even that's just a question of scale. You can't tell me that their lot are any worse than our lot, it's just that the 'field of influence' is a bliddy sight bigger.

Live and let live springs to my mind.

LR did you get up on the wrong side of Birmingham this morning (Oh I forgot there is no right side is there?) Seem to be a little pissed off about something. Personally, being a Geordie and simply making a living in the states I agree alot with what you imply. However there are many many Americans that are really sound people. America does also provide a decent lifestyle for those of us who have chosen this side of the Atlantic to make a living. I often scan the papers in England to see what sort of job opportunities are around and I am surprised to find that the job market is poor. Just because you're a Man U fan don't take it out on everyone.

Live and let live.....that's EXACTLY what I do mate. I don't give a hoots who is running the US....as long as they don't affect me. :-)

-- Anonymous, November 03, 2000

Syme...I wasn't questioning the US way of life. You asked if anyone was interested in the American leadership fight..I'm not.

-- Anonymous, November 03, 2000

LR, So why did you respond to the orginal thread? I am interested if only because I have to be. I only wanted to gauge what opinions (if any) me fellow Englishman have. You're opinion is respected and noted, but you did make a broad sweeping statement about the US in general, which in turn prompted my response. I'd much rather argue the finer points of Beckham's best postion and why is Bosnich Man U's fourth choice. Talk about a dream move that went south.

Dumb question but when exactly is the election ?

-- Anonymous, November 03, 2000

Toosdy.

LR,

Ever hear the phrase "little englander"?
I lived in the US for 8 years, and one thing I learned was that it is impossible (and unreasonable) to generalise about it. For instance, believe it or not, they're NOT all overweight, loud and lacking in class and social graces.
It is a wonderful varied country, devoid of the stifling negativity that dominates "this sceptred Isle".
Despite popular belief over here, the vast majority of it's people are warm and friendly, and most places have far less violent and social crime than in dear ol' blighty - I felt infinitely safer living there than I do here, where my house has more security devices than HMP Durham A Wing. In my experience most hostility towards the US here is based on entirely on covetousness.

Clarky...you will find that living in the middle of Wyoming....:-)

Naa...Yanks?....stuff 'em....from their Government downwards.

LR,

Good to see that summat's stirred you. You've been a little lethargic recently.

Having worked in the States I must agree with Clarky. Stereotyping may be easy and fun, but its rarely accurate - just ask any Man.Utd. supporter.

Any road up, I'd have thought that you'd be more empathic to our colonial cousins - after all, most of them are brother Manure supporters.

40 years younger and I'd be posting from the states.

Canny one on 'Have I got news for you' on Friday.

1st Speaker : American chat shows these days are all Bush and Gore. 2nd Speaker : That's exactly how I'd describe Channel 5.
