Occurances of the Lord's Prayer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

Hi!

I'm a Sunday School Teacher and I was recently asked a couple of interesting questions that I'm quite sure that I answered correctly, but now I'm doubting that I did.

1) Does the Lord's prayer occur during baptisim and confirmation ceremonies itself? Or is just during the ceremonial mass that they occur?

2) Does the Lord's Prayer occur in the Liturgy of Hours?

I'm pretty sure that the prayer happens in the ceremonies but not in the Liturgy of Hours. Can anyone tell me if I'm right?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, Mary. Welcome!
I pray Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours almost every day. (I also love to look at the two "lessons" in the Office of Readings each day -- one taken from the Bible and one that is usually from a saint or early Church Father.)

The Lord's Prayer is indeed a "fixture" in both Morning and Evening Prayer. It is recited or sung between the psalmody and the intercessions. [The psalmody consists of two psalms and one canticle (scriptural song of praise), each with an antiphon. The intercessions are much like the "Prayer of the Faithful" at Mass.]

God bless you.

Hello again, Mary.
I can confirm that the Lord's Prayer is prayed during the Rite of Baptism when the Sacrament is celebrated outside of Mass.
The full baptismal rite can be found here.

It would be pretty rare, I think, to find the Sacrament of Confirmation celebrated outside the context of Mass, so the Lord's Prayer would naturally be a part of the Mass. I was not able to find the text of the current rite (1975), but I was able to find the text of the older rite in an essay written during Vatican II (1964). A comment states that it is customary in the U.S. for the bishop to lead the "confirmandi" and congregation in the several prayers, including the Lord's Prayer.

God bless you.
John
