Loosing Pigment

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Shih-Tzu Talkshop : One Thread

I think maybe some of you have an idear. One of my bitches loose pigment in the muzzle aera every time starting in November.By the time, when it is spring Feb/March she is totally black again. Any idear what causes this or what to do to prevent this from starting. I do give some natural tablets out of seaweed etc..This stuff does not really help with the pigment, but it gives my bitches coat and orange color.LOL.Looks great by the way.

I know the condition you are talking about - I have always known it to be called `winter nose`! I shall see what I can find out about it! (:o)

I hav'nt had this before.I show this one in the wrong time and the judge stated that my dog is a liver and through her out of the ring.LOL Thank good she has the breed permission where they wrote that she had excellent black pigment. Otherwise it has knocked me down. I just thought that this must have it's heritage somewhere.Who knows?

How odd!! I was assuming your dog had only lost some pigmentation on the nose - liver dogs have paler pigmentation everywhere. Perhaps the judge did not look closely enough, or the lighting was bad? (:o)

She is getting lighter in the black but just at this time of the year and only in this parts. If you look at her you can see the has black spots on the stomach and between the paw etc. she is dark black. I don't know what was wrong with the judge. It is true that she get lighter but she is not a liver.

I`ve asked everyone I know about this, and they all say the same - `oh, it`s just winter nose!` I am assuming that it is some kind of vitamin deficiency which the lack of sunshine causes. I wouldn`t worry too much about it Brigitte - it just seems like the judge has never hear of this condition!(:o)

Hi Brigitte - what`s really odd is that we haven`t had a really cold winter, but we have had a very wet, and therefore cloudy winter. So is it lack of sunshine? (:o)
