In the Purloined letter, is Detective Dupin acting as a criminal to do his work? Also, what other works of Poe's does Detective Dupin appear in?

Dupin is not acting as a criminal if you read near the end of the story Dupin mentions that He worked for the woman that had the letter stolen. I know he appears in more stories but the only one i know of is Murders in the rue morgue
