- Haway! Bosses at Newcastle Brown Ale are shedding their working man's image and going for a new-look drinker.

The traditional drink of labourers, students and bikers is to go under the microscope after brewer Scottish Courage hired a firm of consultants to work on the brand.

Circus won the task of revamping the classic beer brand in a competitive pitch earlier this year. The company will work on the brand strategy as well as help to develop a website and a communications campaign dedicated to the beer.

Paul Twivy, a partner at Circus, said: "Newcastle Brown is in a category of its own and inspires a lot of affection in its drinkers. It deserves to be liberated from the cage its reputation currently places it in, ie as an old-fashioned, Geordie working man's staple or a beer for students and bikers.

"It is actually that rare thing, a beer of real character, and our aim is to bring that character alive."

Stuart Catchpole, brands director for Scottish Courage, said he was confident the beer's fortunes could be turned around.

"We were impressed by Circus's holistic approach to the brand's issues and the quality of their creative work," he added.

This is the second time Scottish Courage has tried to take Newcastle Brown upmarket.

In 1996 the brewer launched an advertising campaign using the line, "World famous British beer" in a bid to tone down the brand's laddish image and reintroduce it as a premium beer. -

Does anyone else take a "holistic approach" to Broon!?
