greenspun BBs problems.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I, like many have had great dificulty posting on here over the weekend. Is it a one off?

I've tried a few times to get my Perl script BBs to work but have had a few problems. Basially It's the same format as the strawberry and RTG, I have the scripts and the CGI bin etc, but can't fathom out where to put them . Ok so I am a bit thick, can anyone help?

I'm nwould like to get a BBs ip and running to run alongside3 this one and the Strawberry. I would make it a Password protected BBS, as the Strawberry has too many Makems. I would like it to me Viewable by all but accessable only to NUFC fans (with exceptions to trusted others such as LR ) I'd also have it Advert free and fee from all the fancy stuff that slows many of the BBs's down.

Howay lads and lasses, someone out their must have a better idea about perl scripts CGI bins and directories than I have.

Rik, I'll try and get hold of my web host as he promised to put a good one on my site, password protected only if you want to post, so that people can view it and only have to log on if you're planning on posting. If you see what I mean, I can't install it as I know jack about cgi and perl, having said that if anyone knows how it I would gladly let them be webmaster or BBS master or whatever.

Surely someone can help Rik sort this out so that he can at least have a functional alternative to this site, which seems to be becoming increasingly unreliable.
If we learnt anything from the Communicata fiasco it is that we MUST have a viable alternative. I certainly share Rik's misgivings about all the present alternatives.

C'mon you techies!!!

As I said before, the gallowgate is an okay alternative for when this crashes, it isn't as good as this but it's there and it works. And as I said I'm going to talk to my hosts to get a better bulletin board placed on there. But as I said there is a bb at the gallowgate now for all emergencies.

Rik have a look at www.beholder.net, which has got a much better layout than the strawberry, and each user can choose their own style. That's what I'm trying to get on my site.

I was playing around with ASP pages and built a Communicata style BBS on the Daily Toon. Not sure how stable it is as it's running on an access97 database :-)
Anyway, interested parties should go to here and click on the message board link on the left hand side.

Russ has put a message page on NUFC-The-Truth. He could use the hits, so do think of him if you need to vent some spleen and this place is down.

Just been playing at the Daily toon, and I reckon once the bugs are sorted his BBs could have great potential. Did you get my E mail Scratchy?

Rik - got your email - worked out 2 of the problems. Database has a limit of 50 on the message field - which I've sorted out on my PC offline. Also sorted out the ' and " crap.
I'll send you a mail from my work account later when I've got it all uploaded.

Scratchy,

Tried it out in desperation earlier this evening after having been unable to get on here all day. It's actually pretty damned good - well done.
It seemed to me as though the ' issue was still a problem, even if " had been resolved.
I guess the big issue relates to the server capacity if and when we really got it smoking - any thoughts?

the ' shouldn't be a problem in the text (this bit) but it's playing up on the subject and topic part (even though I put the same bit of code to swap the ' for the html code).
On request of Softie and Rik a login procedure is coming along - should allow lurkers to read but 'registered' users to post (also help stop the filth from the Mackems mouths as seen on the Strawberry message board).
It's an access database btw - so it's as sturdy as Microsoft's firewall (oops).
