Yes, and pride comes before a fall! I think Flint will recover though, he'll just have to set aside his pomposity.

Any programmer working in real time must be aware of interrupts. Real time programming is concerned with the actual time an event happens, or the actual duration of an event. Most programs (like word processors) are not real-time programs, except insofar as they really should service one keystroke before the next one happens. There are GOBS of time between keystrokes for even the fastest typist, and anyway if one is missed, who cares? The user will just type it again.

But in real time, you must be aware that interrupts are asynchronous. This means they could interrupt your code at any time, and return control to your code after an indeterminate period. So if you're writing, say, a benchmark program, interrupts can make your results unacceptably variable.

Yes, it's possible to *disable* interrupts, but doing so becomes more dangerous the longer they are disabled. In this context, dangerous means risking the loss of a network connection, or corrupting a file on the hard drive. So interrupts are like the opposite sex -- you can't live with them, and you can't live without them. Real time operating systems (there are many) compete with one another in terms of how well they handle these interrupt tradeoffs.

al-d, I quit hanging out here for a while but popped back in to check out what's going on. NOTHING, ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING! Are you preaching to the choir? Damn, only 11 posts on this forum today and your still ranting. I'm sure the Mormons, JW's, Baptists, etc., have forums you can take your proselytizing to. You'll find major "religious" debating on those sites and they'll give you some food for thought.
