The Australian dollar finished the day fractionally stronger but this belied a savage fall to record lows overnight.

The currency was gripped by selling fever in London as the euro was also driven down to record lows against the US dollar and Japanese yen.

The Australian dollar traded down to a record low of 51.35 US cents before bouncing back above 52 US cents.

'It recovered very nicely this morning to be around 52.22 (high) and then throughout most of the day it traded quite a tight range from 51.80 to 52,' Stephen Halmarick, strategist at Salomon Smith Barney said.

'It's been a pretty quiet end to the day but it still looks pretty vulnerable,' he added. At 1700 AEDT the local currency was trading at $US0.5196/01 from 0.5182/86 at yesterday's close
