Low Funds Caused By Computer Glitches County Owes More Than $750,000

TULSA, Okla., Updated 8:49 a.m. CDT October 26, 2000 -- Computer glitches are being blamed for slowing the flow of money intended for teams that fight child abuse in Oklahoma.

The Legislature increased civil filing fees and other court fees by $10, intending to raise around $4 million for the teams.

County clerks said that the computer problems are the result of upgrades made late last year in the state's eight most populous counties.

Tulsa County Court Clerk Sally Howe Smith said that the problem is beyond her control. She said that the county is collecting the increased fees. Smith said that the money owed to the Department of Human Services would be disbursed as soon as possible.

Oklahoma County Court Clerk Priscilla Presley estimates that the county owes $750,000 to $800,000. She said that a large payment could be made in as little as two weeks.
