British tax authority writes off mispayments

LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - People who paid too
much tax will not be identified by Britain's
tax authority and the onus is on them to claim
for repayments, the Inland Revenue said on
Thursday.

Following a computer glitch, tax records from
1997-8 for over one million people are missing
essential data. As a result, the Inland Revenue
will not be able to identify overpayments or
underpayments made under PAYE schemes.

``We are looking at about a million cases,'' a
spokeswoman for the Revenue told Reuters.
