Dear Jenny,

Here is a quick run-down on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado", "Hop-Frog" and "MS. Found in a bottle":

"The Cask of Amontillado": Basically, a tale about revenge. The two characters which feature are called Fortunato and Montresor. The latter leads the former into some catacombs or underground cellars with the promise of offering him some Amontillado. The reader learns that this is merely a pretext to furnish Montresor with the ideal place in which to entomb Fortunato alive, where there are no witnesses (there are of course more issues, but this is a fairly adequate summary of the basic plot).

"Hop-Frog": also very much a story about revenge or giving somebody "their just desserts". The eponymous character "Hop-Frog", who plays a role akin to that of a court-jester, of earned his rather derogatory and cruel nickname from the King and his ministers, in reference to the manner in which he walks. Due to the constant taunting and cruel treatment of Hop-Frog and another character called Trippetta (or something similar: forgive me I am working from memory), the former convinces the King &co. to dress up as orangutans or apes for a forthcoming carnival or festive gathering. Hop-Frog finally manages to chain these characters up (in the "spirit" of amusing the assembled parti-goers you understand: in fact this is Hop-Frog's excuse or pretext to get King &co. exactly where he wants them, just like Montresor in the last tale) and then executes the lot by a rather gruesome method involving a chandelier.

For my brief summary of the last tale "MS Found in a Bottle" may I refer you to the following thread:

Well, I hope that these help you out, and if you have any other queries you may feel free to contact me on them:

Yours sincerely

Pragmatic Poe
