Are standard poodles easier to housetrain?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Poodle Support Group : One Thread

We filled out a survey on the internet that tells you what dog would be right for your family. Standard poodle came up as 100%. From the info I gave it. First in formost was that it had to be intellegent! Some dogs are harder then others as training goes. I was wondering, we are thinking about getting a standard male 4 1/2 mon old. Actually we have already put down $50.00 to hold the puppy till we can go this weekend to get him. But I am very nervous as we had a couple of smaller breeds, Chihuahua, and a maltesen puppy that just didn't work out for us because of housebreaking, it just didn't happen with them. How much easier and quicker is it for a Standard poodle to pick this up. I have heard nothing but good about the standards and have been told that the smaller toy breeds are usually more difficult to housebreak. I don't have a whole lot of patience when it comes to this thing, and I know that ou need it when dealing with a puppy, but the crate thing hasn'[t worked with the other 2, and my mom housebroke allour dogs without using one. Is the standard going to be smarter?

HI Tammy, Before you pick up your dog, you might want to do a more through research on the standard poodle. PLEASE LOOK AT: www.vipoodle.org This is the most comprehensive source of information about poodles you will find. It will tell you all about finding a reputable breeder, picking a dog, and all of the information about genetic problems that standard poodles could have. Remember that the knowledge you learn now will benefit you and your new pet. This is a lifetime commitment. What is the breeders name? How long have they been selling standard poodles? Have you looked back at his/her pedigree? Have you met the sire and dam? This is VERY important for purposes of analysis of his/her temperment and the "look" of your dog. Crate training is recommended, as it gives your dog a "den" and he/she is safe there when you are away. Poodles are intelligent, and can, on occasion, out-smart a human. Beware! Ha ha! Please join the PSG list and ask questions there. You will find many types of poodle owners, obedience, show, Search and Rescue, tracking, as well as pet and rescue work. All have something to contribute to PSG and you will find a wealth of knowledge here. Good luck, and let us know how things turn out! Sincerely, Frances Coss
