Dear Ranae,

Poe's first tale which can be described as detective fiction is entitled "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", introducting the detective character of Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin, a precursor of, among other fictional detectives, the great sleuth Sherlock Holmes.

Poe also wrote two follow-up tales, or sequels to "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" featuring the same detective figure. These are: "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Purloined Letter".

I hope this answers your question. If you have any queries, please contact me and I shall try to explain them to you:

Yours sincerely,

Pragmatic Poe

Ranae,

While I agree with Scott's facts and his list of stories by Poe, you must understand that Edgar did not originate the detective or mystery genre. However, through his originality and unique approach to the genre, he certainly made it worth reading and earned the title of the father of the American mystery tale.
