Ranae,

Generally, there are several issues that add to the mystery of how Poe ended up in Baltimore lying in the street in front of the Fourth Ward Polls. Poe had left Richmond, Virginia for New York to retrieve his Aunt Clemm and bring her back to Richmond for his marriage to Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton scheduled for October 17, 1849. When he left Richmond, he was said to be in good condition and eager to see to the start of his magazine, The Stylus. It has been said that he left with a large sum of money from subscriptions for the magazine.

When he was found by a printer by the name of Walker, he was in soiled clothing, not his own, and in poor condition. The printer sent a note to Dr. John E. Snodgrass, an known friend of Poe's and Snodgrass found him at Gunner's Hall on East Lombard Street.

Over time, there has been much speculation and best guessing regarding how Poe came to be where he was found. You can read the details of these theories at:http://www.eapoe.org/geninfo/poedeath.htm
