Sewer spill causes massive fish kill

Edited by Marie Dunn-Harris October 19, 2000

PARMA, Ohio -- Thousands of fish in a chain of scenic lakes in Parma were killed after a sewer spill.

The EPA and the Cuyahoga County Health Department warned residents to stay out of Ridgewood Lake, Lower Ridgewood Lake and Twin Lakes after a piece of concrete lodged in a sewer pipe causing a backup.

City workers are skimming dead fish from Ridgewood Lake and yesterday began pumping in clean water from hydrants to jump start the restoration process.

Mark Seifert, a sanitarian for the Health Department, said although Twin Lakes spill into a Cuyahoga River tributary -- he is not concerned about downstream pollution because the water is re-oxygenated as it spills over a 7-foot dam into into Twin Lakes.

Hey don't worry. A little sewer water in your morning coffee won't hurt you.
